When creating the “Usher x 1738 A.I. Powered” limited-edition, Usher used his own musical vocabulary to describe his olfactory experience with the renowned Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, a smooth Cognac characterized by notes of toasted bread, vanilla and brioche. Fed through A.I. technology, known as Generative Adversarial Neural Networks and Contrastive Language-Image Pre-Training, the avant-garde depiction of tasting notes transformed Usher’s words into artwork that makes the invisible, visible. A unique blend of column and pot still rums from Jamaica brought as fresh rums in Scotland for maturation. The assemblage is composed of 2005 New Yarmouth Pot Still Rum, 2005 Long Pond Pot Still Rum, 2007 Clarendon Estate Column & Pot Still Rum as well as a 2008 Pot Still Rum distilled in Lluidas Vale, Jamaica. The site of our distillery is rich with Kentucky history. Here on the medieval-style grounds, dating back to 1887, whiskey was once made under the watchful eye of Colonel E.H. Taylor. Decades later, after his passing, the distillery itself fell into disrepair and sat abandoned for half a century. And that, we thought, would not do. When we started Castle & Key, our dream was to build on Colonel Taylor’s fine foundation. Our single barrel rye is perhaps the purest fruit of that ambition: each bottle derived from one barrel, never blended, the full breadth of a whiskey’s journey from grain to glass enclosed in a singular product. Rieger’s Bottled in Bond Straight Bourbon
This Bottled in Bond Bourbon is as American as the story of J. Rieger & Co. itself. Founded by immigrants in 1887 and assumed to be a permanent casualty of prohibition, our distillery was revived in 2014 by a group of modern pioneers that included the great, great-grandson of Jacob Rieger himself.
This Bourbon, distilled from corn, rye, and malted barley, has been aged for six years in our rick house and is the first offering of this spirit since our resurrection.

Our 2021 Bottled In Bond Straight Rye Whiskey represents the first Whiskey distilled in Kansas City since Prohibition, and the first barrels laid down at the J. Rieger & Co. distillery in nearly a century. We proudly present this 6-year-old Rye to you in remembrance of, and in tribute to, one of our founding partners, Dave Pickerell.
