Jefferson’s Tropics Review

by Stephen Hunt

Jefferson’s Bourbon is a brand well known for their Unorthodox, bordering on eccentric focus on maturation processes. Known most for sending their barrels to circumnavigate the globe to see how the extreme variance of weather on the High seas affects the final product. Most recently they sent a selection of fully matured bourbon casks to Singapore to finish for 18 months in the severe heat and humidity.  The Idea behind this is that more of the water would evaporate than alcohol requiring less dilution to proof it down to 104, resulting in a more flavorful and complex Bourbon.

Upon pouring a glass you are greeted by a strong but pleasant oak aroma with a hint of tropical fruit.  With a mash bill of 75% Corn, 13% Rye, and 12% Malted Barley, you get a smooth flavor profile of oak, vanilla, and very light spice and citrus notes.  A Medium body that sits on the back of the tongue and a pleasant lingering finish of caramel and oak that invites you back for another sip.
