Los Javis Mezcal Espadin Joven Review

Los Javis Mezcal Espadin Joven is handcrafted and bottled in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico amount the verdant fields of Santiago Mazatlan by three generations of Javiers, led by Maestro Mezcalero Don Javier Mateo. Their process includes hand-selecting maguey/agave (Capon), which are then roasted in a conical stone oven, Tahona milled(crushed by horse drawn tahona), naturally fermented in wooden vats, then distilled in small copper pots.

The sample provided to us by Los Javis was produced in 2019, from batch 55 and was #1144 of 4830 bottles.

Tasting Notes:

Nose- Warm soil just after a fresh rain, newly sprouted grass, and smoke

Palate- sweet agave with hints of vanilla and soft tang of orange zest that leaves a faint bitterness on the palate.

Finish- A dry, tart flavor lingers before closing with a well-rounded earthiness like crisp greens that have just been harvested.

As an ever-growing fan of Mezcal, I found this relative newcomer to be incredibly balanced with all the right flavors I’ve come to expect from a high-quality Mezcal. I loved the earthiness balanced with sweet agave and a light zest. Not too smoky, not too sweet, everything was just right and I’ll be regularly stocking this as part of my collection.
